Tell us a little bit about yourself
I’m a producer under the name "Taglo". Currently live on the Gold Coast, and have been producing/DJing for about 10 years now.
I’m signed onto Silk Music & Alter Ego records, and produce deep & progressive music.
There are few projects that you are involved in. Can you give us a 30 second pitch for each of them?
Just a few ha ha! I run EDEN QLD, Eden Melbourne & I’m the booking manager (or as I like to say "master" ha ha) for Sub Rosa in Brisbane.
Eden QLD is mainly now in Brisbane at Sub Rosa.. but we have done events at Platinum Nightclub on the Gold coast.. and Family Nightclub in Brisbane. We focus on Deep & Progressive music, so we get a lot of the Anjunadeep/Anjunabeats sort of artists coming through. So guys like Spencer Brown, Yotto, Luttrell, Oliver Smith, Ben Bohmer, Lane 8 etc. We have been going for around 4 years.
Eden Melbourne is the exact same as QLD, just in Melbourne. We host our nights at Platform One and we started that last year.
With Sub Rosa, i organise all the events and nights. So basically I organise external promoters coming in and hiring the venue, and also book the artists for Sub Rosa's own nights, including internationals and local line-ups. We are pushing really cool music, mainly Minimal, House & Melodic Techno with a bit of progressive which is cool because no other venue in Brisbane is really pushing that. We have a bunch of cool acts coming up, such as Roy Rosenfeld, Brian Cid, Henry Saiz, Ben Pearce and more to announce soon.
You are looking for a new venue for PSYDEN. How is the search going and what are the challenges?
That’s been tuff! Platinum Nightclub is closed at the moment until they find new owners, and that’s been our home for the past 3 years or so. So it feels very weird to be looking at other venues as Platinum's our home. That’s where Eden really took off and became its own.
The problem at the moment, is that we need to keep PSYDEN on the Gold Coast, as most of our crowd is from the coast and northern NSW. Brisbane would be to far to move it, and the clubs on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) don’t really suit the "psy" or "doof" crowd. We don’t really want to force it at a venue that it doesn’t suit, and quality sound systems are a big must! So at the moment, we are still searching until something that feels right comes up!
What advice can you give aspiring DJ's, producers or promoters?
For DJ's... try get into producing music as early as possible! It’s really hard to make a career out of just DJing. Producing take a lot of time and effort and it isn’t for everyone, but it will really help you take that extra step into getting gigs interstate and overseas.
For current producer, don’t give up!! There’s so many times I’ve hit "the wall" and thought I’d never get past it. Practice, practice and more practice! If you’re really serious about it, all the big names ive spoken to over the years told me, if you want to make it in this industry, you need to give music 100% or nothing. If your working a full time job and trying to make it as a producer, it’s going to be very very difficult, and not many people make it that way, as music takes a lot of time. You’re going to be broke for a long time as well, but if you truly want it... it WILL happen if you put the work in.
Promoters - Make friends not enemies!! The way Eden has worked out so well is because we work with other promoters. What I mean by that is, if you’re pushing a certain style of music, try talking to the other guys doing similar things. Throw some nights and do them together, and if you can’t do that, at least talk to each other and make sure your not overlapping with similar artists & events. The scene, especially in QLD, doesn’t work when people are fighting for the same crowd. It’s too small of a population for that.
Work together and you can all benefit from each other.
Jungle or Balearic Chillout?
Balearic Chillout any day of the week!! Silk Music is one of my fave labels.. same with "All Day I Dream". If you haven’t listened to either of those labels, check them out!!
